The atmosphere was absolutely rustic, filled with joy and amazement. The visitors were taken back to the past with the help of the traditional music, the costumes, the smell of the traditional food, the beautiful handmade jewelries, and the smell of fresh straw. The organizers were paying special attention to the children. Although the weather was poor and a bit rainy, it could not ruin the children fun, they were still playing in the straw. There was also a handcrafted carousel waiting the children with its baskets and wooden horses. Toma and his team from Hungary brought their traditional games, and they were teaching the children to play all weekend long. This year`s highlight was the pinhole photographer which was joyful even for the adults as well. It was unexpected, creative and even unbelievable that with the help of such a simple instrument, photos can be made. The performers of the fair were: The Fabatka Quartet, the Codex ensemble, the Muzsikás ensemble, the Kanara ensemble, Nadara Transylvanian Gypsy Band etc. The meeting of the genres was the main aspect in the first edition of the compilation of PulzArt contemporary arts festival program, which was organizes at 5-8 September in Sfântu Gheorghe (in Hungarian: Sepsiszentgyörgy). The organizers were: Sfântu Gheorghe Youth Council and the Town Hall of Sfântu Gheorghe/Sepsiszentgyörgy Municipality. The message of the festival was heard: productions were about the now, and the present, existed an interoperability between different cultural areas, participation, interaction. This festival was not about quantity, but quality presentation of contemporary artistic production in Transylvania, which rarely reach our region. The PulzArt contemporary arts festival is the central event of the Sfântu Gheorghe Transylvanian Capital of Culture program, and is the meeting point of the four thematic years. 2013 is the Year of the Sound and Word, so the contemporary literature and music got a special place, with a number of productions that combines the two artistic genres. The Semifinal winners are: Candles, ceramics and pottery, knitwear, weavings, jewelry, wood carvings and other original gifts and creative Christmas decorations were offered at the Christmas Fair in the heart of Sfântu Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy) between 14–24 December. At the Liberty Square transformed into pedestrian zone, winter songs and dances interpreted by groups from the local schools and kindergartens, traditional culinary delights and winter tastes have created a playful holiday atmosphere. The main aim of the fair organized by the Town was to support the local craftsmen and manufacturers with sale surfaces offered for free and to supply the visitors with a wide range of creative, personalized gifts. During the fair period in a specially arranged yurt all manner of traditional gastronomic specialties such as sausage, liverwurst, greaves, bread and dripping as well as mulled wine waited for those who had got hungry while shopping. The authentic food offer was enriched by gastronomic events like pig butchering and pork jelly cooking contest. Christmas fair in Sfântu Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy) was first held in 2007. Since then it is continually growing and it is on the way of becoming a regional tourist attraction. Plans approved and construction contract signed on 25th November, three years after winning the construction tender, for establishing a seventeen hectare (17 ha) industrial park at Câmpul Frumos (Szépmező). According to Antal Árpád András, mayor of Sfântu Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy), the park is the most important and profitable investment of the local government. The date of this year’s Sekler Gallop was finalized. The large scale event organized by the local government of our city will take place during the period 14-15 July. Good news is that thoroughbreds will not start on this year’s National Gallop, so the ones qualified at the Sekler Gallop will not have to compete with sport horses. The event’s official website is the following: www.szekelyvagta.ro Gödri Ferenc Jr. was one of the most remarkable mayors of our city, leading and building Sepsiszentgyörgy for a period of 18 years (starting with the 20th of July 1895 until his early death on the 5th of July 1913). Among others he was leading chief trustee of the Reformed Church, councilor of the Sepsi Reformed Diocese, member of the Székely Mikó College’s provost, town clerk, chairman of the elementary schools’ Board of Trustees, member of the state civil schools’ Board of Trustees, member of the training schools’ Board of Supervision, and last but not least member of the Székely Mikó College Board of Directors. His work was characterized by pure progress: he re-organized and re-built the city. Sepsiszentgyörgy’s local government is going to organize a double memorial year on the occasion of the birth of Gödri Ferenc’s 150th anniversary this year and on his death’s 100th anniversary next year. In this manner our city wants to make amends for unjustly forgetting Gödri Ferenc and for caring too little for his character and activities. Accordingly, a scientific conference will be organized on the 3rd of October (Gödri Ferenc was born on the 3rd of October, 1862) where professionals will give presentations about the great mayor’s life and work. Moreover our city’s mayor will make a proposition to the local council for elaborating an urban development plan named after Gödri Ferenc from now until 2020 (adapting to the European Union’s 2013-2020 budget cycle). At the same time Gödri Ferenc’s half-length portrait has been found in the Székely National Museum’s stock-house which is going to be placed in the City Hall’s renovated building and the idea of creating a full length statue of both Gödri Ferenc and Potsa József is also taking shape. The Szent György days return in 2012. The cultural week will be extended with one more day, the program lasting from the 21st until the 29th of April this year. Similar to the previous years the weekend festival will be preceded by a cultural week that will begin with the traditional opening concert on Saturday (instead of the already accustomed Sunday), April the 21st. The events of the cultural week augur to be of high quality and entertaining at the same time. This week is the Szent György days’ “front runner” during which the stages of Sepsiszentgyörgy’s cultural institutions give space to the appearance of well-known and successful artists. There will be classical music concerts, children performances, and a vast number of theatrical performances this year as well. Theatre lovers will be given the possibility to attend, among others, the following successful plays: Dan Gordon: Rain Man (directed by Anger Zsolt, starring Kulka János – Kossuth-award winning actor, Nagy Ervin – film actor, Kézdy György and Cseh Judit; the artists of the Hungarian National Theatre will perform on April the 22nd from 5pm and 8pm in the Tamási Áron Theatre’s great hall); the Bandy girls (a Bandy-lányok) musical drama (directed by Ascher Tamás – Kossuth and Jászai-award winning director, play written by Parti Nagy Lajos Kossuth-award winning poet and playwright; starring Hernádi Judit and Udvaros Dorottya; the artists will perform on April the 23rd from 5pm and 8:30pm in the Tamási Áron Theatre’s great hall). Furthermore the program will also include craft fair and Cultural Garden (mostly with folk, ethno, jazz and world music concerts). Three stages will be set up for the performers: on the Szabadság (Liberty) Square, on the Sepsiszentgyörgy Sqaure and in the yard of the Székely National Museum. According to Grubisics Levente, the festival’s director, this year’s program will be much clearer, because last year there have been many indications pointing out the fact that as a result of the programs’ consistency people have had difficulties in getting to each and every event. However this does not mean that the composition of the program will be poorer, it just means that a bigger emphasis will be put on providing the enquirers the possibility to get to each event in time. The main guest of this year’s Szent György days will be the famous Omega band from Hungary that will start its tour in Saint George on the 29th of April and will end it in September in Budapest. Other significant guests: Iris, Republik, Hooligans, Irigy Hónaljmirigy, Taxi, Cry Free – Deep Purple’s Favourite Tribute Band, Holdviola, Boban&Marko Markovic Orchestra and many more. The large scale theatrical event, organized for the 2nd time by the Tamási Áron Theatre, the City Council and the County Council of Sepsiszentgyörgy, will take place during the period 16-29 March, 2012. In the past two decades one of the Tamási Áron Theatre’s most significant objectives has been to spread and promote the values of contemporary theatrical culture among the audience of our city. On the grounds of its public’s openness and susceptibilty to the values of contemporary theatre Sepsiszentgyörgy is considered to be one of the most significant centres of the Hungarian and Romanian theatrical culture. Since the 1960s this small town of the Sekler territory had a significant artistic tradition. With serious support from the local authorities a series of programs meant to strengthen and bring the town's artistic life into a European connection have been organized. Among these the REFLEX International Theatre Biennale is especially important thanks to its country-wide notoriety and international outlook. With its Central European perspective and highlight agenda the REFLEX festival offers an outlook to Hungarian theatre professionals and accesses contemporary theatrical values currently unavailable within Hungarian theatrical events. In the European panorama of theatre festivals the REFLEX International Theatre Biennale's uniqueness is given by its area of interest. It intends to be a mainly Central European review within the European theatrical culture. Very few of the region's festivals have similar conceptions. Our goal is to establish an event that reviews productions from Central Europe, each awarded by their own cultures, to compare the theatrical solutions to similar problems in a region of a unique historical, political and social background and by doing that, to become a representative review of all Eastern and Central European theatre. The purpose of this second edition of the festival is to take in the contemporary theatrical tendencies, the cutting edge of a present-day European theatre searching for new paths and forms. The first edition brought eight award-winning plays from five countries: Romania, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic and, from Berlin, the world-famous Deutsches Theater's production of Oreszteia, directed by Michael Thalheimer. The Maecenas season tickets have been created for the theatre loving audience this year again to support the festival and to contribute to its creation in the future as well. The event’s official website is the following: www.reflexfest.ro. Last year our city celebrated its 550 years of urban status. The local government of Sepsiszentgyörgy wanted to make the anniversary memorable by various series of events organized all year round. The proposed programs have fallen into three categories: cultural, creative-interactive and entertaining (music, sports) programs through which the municipality aimed to address each and everyone. Although the programs varied a lot, the municipality focused primarily on ensuring opportunity for a more detailed understanding of the city through the celebration of its 550 years of existence. They wanted the exploration of the city’s past to be interesting for the city’s residents as well, but they also wanted the event series to be about the present. A renowned team of experts was working on the event series and on the creation of the programs. The organizers wanted to take into account all target groups (from the young to the elderly ones). Accordingly, children had the opportunity to participate in thematic drawing competitions and the elderly were provided the possibility to tell stories, in the framework of a documentary film, about the formation of the city in the course of their lives, particularly with regard to the events surrounding the end of communism. The main organizer of the event series was the Mayor’s Office through the coordination of the Városimázs (city image) Office. Partner organizations were the following: the Székely National Museum, the Bod Péter County Library and other institutions, cultural and sports associations and NGOs. This year Sepsiszentgyörgy is the Cultural and Youth Capital of Sekler Land. The year-round series of programs entitled “Cultural and Youth Capital of Sekler Land” has been organized on behalf of the Mayor’s Office and the City Council’s order. The program series starts off tomorrow, on the 3rd of March. Te initiator of the event, Veres-Nagy Tímea, reported yesterday, within the confines of a press conference, about the programs of the opening event. – Eleven youth organizations will begin to work together, we will practically furnish the event’s framework so that the organizations could present themselves on the one hand, and entertain the city’s youth along with each other on the other hand – announced Veres-Nagy Tímea. The office of the event series, the Youth Resource Center, will officially be opened tomorrow as well, that will deal with the management of the programs, and will also be the collection site of all the ideas, received all around the year, meant to boost the life of the youth. The Resource Center will be installed in the ground floor office of the Lábas Ház. The programs will begin tomorrow at 6pm: a civil cavalcade will take place on the square situated in front of the Tamási Áron Theatre where youth organizations will present themselves and will also prepare a surprise. In addition, fire dance, flamenco, minigolf, folk dance, jazz, musical instrument fabrication, light music and other interesting activities will await the citizen. The organizers request the enquirers to bring along a youthful photography with them. This idea is linked to the „Let us create together the youth profile of Sepsiszentgyörgy” program. The year of Cultural and Youth Capital will be opened up at 8pm by Antal Árpád András, Mayor of Sepsiszentgyörgy and Tamás Sándor, chairman of the County Council. The opening ceremony will continue with a concert of the Under Cover Band. Additional programs of the night: 9pm – folk dance house and folk pub in the Bástya restaurant, 9pm – Free Conncetion concert in the Tein Teahouse, 9:30pm – party in the Crown club with the contribution of the local Friss Fm radio and the Tein Teahouse. Sepsiszentgyörgy will be the scene of an intimate memorial during the period 9-15 March. Memorial celebrations will take place on several sites of the city with the occasion of the 164th anniversary of the 1848-1849 Revolution. The program includes various events: festive concert with the performance of the Georgius and Csíkikamara orchestra in the Tamási Áron Theatre; memorial running in the tribute of the 1848-1849 Revolution and wreathing at the 1848 revolutionary monuments in all the settlements the memorial running touches upon; ceremonial worship in the Reformed church; decorating all the 1848 revolutionary monuments from Sepsiszentgyörgy with wreaths; ceremonial program on the 15th of March in the memory of the 1848-1849 Revolution at the stage set up in front of the Tamási Áron Theatre. By purchasing the factory building of the LRO company the Autoliv Ltd. from Sweden aims to create 600 jobs in Sepsiszentgyörgy: it will establish a plant manufacturing vehicle safety components already this year. The Sweden-based Autoliv entered the Romanian labor market in 2007 and it has been continuously expanding since then. It has already established factories in Temesvár, Brassó, Lugos and Prázsmár offering, thereby offering jobs to 2500 people. According to Antal Árpád András, mayor of Sepsiszentgyörgy, attracting the Swedish investment group to our city has been the result of several months of hard work. The company has chosen Sepsiszentgyörgy after examining 16 more cities in the country. In this manner the Autoliv factory has been the first investement into production in Sepsiszentgyörgy in the past 11 years. In addition, the Autoliv Ltd. would like to expand its sphere of activities especially since it aims to hire, next to the anticipated 600 workers, 1400-1500 additional people in the following years. Hopefully the Swedish investment group will put an emphasis on development as well, the appropriate location for this being the industial park from Szépmező. Kőnig Frigyes, President of the Hungarian University of Fine Arts is coming to our city at the invitation of the Cultural Center from Árkos, the Lábas Ház and the MAGMA Contemporary Art Exhibition Space. The art loving public will have the opportunity to learn about Kőnig Frigyes’s works of art within the framework of a wide variety of programs: three thematically distinct exhibitions (in the MAGMA Contemporary Art Exhibition Space, the Lábas Ház, the Cultural Center from Árkos), book presentation, lecture, concert, reception, discussions, guided tours. During the period 28 February-2 March our city warmly welcomed a delegation from the Hungarian Mosonmagyaróvár in the pursuit of developing a town-twinning relationship between the two cities. According to Antal Árpád András, mayor of Sepsiszentgyörgy and dr. Nagy István, mayor of Mosonmagyaróvár the cities would like to strenghten their relationship with each other. It is interesting that both cities live in the shadow of a big city: while Mosonmagyaróvár tries to progress near Győr, Sepsiszentgyörgy would like to move forward near Brassó. Furthermore, it is also engaging that Brassó and Győr have a town twinning relationship as well. The economic and civil spheres have already preceded the aspirations of the two cities’ governments: the Mikes Kelemen Lyceum already has a twinning relationship with Mosonmagyaróvár and there is a good cooperation between the Lipót and Diószegi bakeries as well. In addition, many Sepsiszentgyörgy-born live in Mosonmagyaróvár and they have also urged the initiation and development of a town-twinning relationship between the two cities, especially since the fact that the Hungarian city did not have a Transilvanian twin town until now, so our city would be the first one. Both mayors agreed upon the fact that they would like to develop a relationship based not only on the connection between the two mayors. A visit of the Mosonmagyaróvár youth has already been planned. Open Call for Street Artists The „Kónya Ádám” Cultural Centre calls for the application of visual artists in the framework of the 4th edition of the pulzArt Contemporary Art Festival. The project’s theme is the rehabilitation of 3 building passages in Sfantu Gheorghe. The project’s partners’ are: the Tone Troopers Association and the Chamber of Romanian Architects. The project is co-funded by the Administration of the National Cultural Fund of Romania. Pageview: 305424
